[Belgium, June 18, 2024] – Avesta Battery and Energy Engineering (ABEE), a subsidiary of Avesta Holding and a leading player in the European next-generation lithium battery development, has announced a significant milestone in the development of its proprietary battery cells. The company’s solid-state prototype pouch Generation 0 cells have achieved 500 cycles with a capacity retention of 82%. The cells have been undergoing rigorous testing in ABEE laboratories for several months at 25 °C and a pressure of 0.5 kg/cm2.

The company is also conducting trials on the improved Generation 1 battery cells, which have shown a capacity loss of only 3% in the first 100 cycles. The team expects to surpass 1000 cycles with useful capacity retention.
“We are committed to continuing to innovate and improve our technology to meet the evolving needs of our customers and the industry,” said Dr. Rahul Gopalakrishnan, CEO of ABEE. “We believe that our battery cells have the potential to make a significant impact on the world and we are excited to share our achievements with the world.”
The company’s battery cells employ phosphate-based cathodes in a solid-state electrolyte, designed as a drop-in solution to existing manufacturing processes and ensuring compatibility with current gigafactories. Preliminary tests have shown that the solid-state electrolyte significantly improves the safety of the cells.

The company’s product development focuses on phosphate-based cathode batteries with higher specific energies while maintaining safety and low cost. The next trials will focus on optimizing rate capability and by the end of the year ABEE plans to move towards prismatic battery cells.
Dr. Rahul Gopalakrishnan continues: “We are thrilled to share our achievements with the world. Our team has worked tirelessly to develop battery cells that are not only high-performing but safe. We believe that our technology has the potential to revolutionize the battery industry and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future. We will send out our cells for independent validation in the coming months”
