Avesta Battery & Energy Engineering is expanding, so we invite you to join our mission to accelerate the battery market! To sustain our rapid growth and scale our operations to the next level, we are looking for a highly motivated Battery Cell Design and Prototyping Manager.

Overview:

Battery Cell Design and Prototyping Manager will be responsible for leading the cell design activities of lithium-ion and solid-state battery technologies and the scaling-up of production from laboratory-prototyping into pilot and large-scale manufacturing by managing a team of experts in the field.
This role involves designing, testing and validating the battery at the laboratory scale, managing the transfer of technology from the lab- into pilot-scale, and finally supporting the move into the industrial-scale, ensuring a sound product quality.
The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of battery cell design and chemistry, prototyping and upscaling techniques as well as strong project management and team leadership skills.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the lithium-ion and solid-state battery cell design activities by using strong electrochemistry background and knowledge
  • Identifying and addressing all bottlenecks and ensuring that the product development life cycle activities meet the necessary timelines and budgetary goals
  • Manage the electrochemical laboratory team of experts for the testing and validation of the designed cells to achieve an optimum electrochemical behavior and performance
  • Lead the scaling-up of lithium-ion and solid-state battery technologies from laboratory-environment into pilot-line prototyping and further towards a final industry-scale manufactured product
  • Track project progress, prepare detailed reports, and communicate updates to senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Oversee the installation, qualification, and validation of laboratory and manufacturing equipment and systems, ensuring that they meet required specifications and safety standards.
  • Implement testing procedures for laboratory, pilot and industry-scale production of batteries, establish and maintain stringent quality control protocols to ensure the consistency and reliability of upscaled products.
  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies to incorporate advanced design and characterization techniques and methods into the upscaling process.
  • Support troubleshooting and technical problem-solving related to prototyping, scaling up and manufacturing challenges, process deviations, and equipment issues.
  • Ensure that all upscaling activities adhere to environmental, health, and safety regulations, particularly regarding the handling of hazardous materials and energy storage systems.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, with a sound background in lithium-ion and/or solid-state battery technology
  • Past or current work experience at a lithium-ion or solid-state battery company
  • In-depth knowledge of battery chemistry, cell design, and testing techniques
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as coating, calendaring, assembling, and forming of battery cells
  • Experience in team management and exhibit a professional mindset to reach optimum efficiency as a team by setting common goals and offering support and strategies to reach goals
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and different support stakeholders
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, such as ISO 9001, related to battery manufacturing preferred but not a must
